# Understanding Model View vs Instruction View

### What this allows you to do

Understand when to use **Model View** versus **Instruction View**, and how the two work together throughout the instruction-authoring workflow.

### How to Think About the Two Views

Model View and Instruction View use the same underlying data and stay fully in sync, but each is optimized for a different part of the workflow.

Rather than thinking of them as separate tools, it’s helpful to think of them as **two lenses on the same build**.

### Model View: Structuring the Build

* Model View is where you focus on **structure**.
* Use Model View to prepare the assembly so it reflects how the product is actually built in manufacturing. This includes organizing hierarchy, grouping components, and shaping the structure that instruction steps will be based on.
* Think of Model View as defining *what gets built, and in what order*.

### Instruction View: Communicating the Build

* Instruction View is where you focus on **communication**.
* Use Instruction View to turn the prepared structure into step-by-step work instructions by defining steps, visuals, animations, and requirements.
* Think of Instruction View as defining *how the build is presented to the operator*.

### Typical Workflow

Most users follow a workflow like this:

1. Structure the assembly in Model View
2. Author steps in Instruction View
3. Move back and forth as needed to refine structure and presentation

By separating structure from instruction authoring, BuildOS keeps instructions accurate, readable, and easy to maintain.
