# Adding fixtures

This will cover how to add fixtures to your instruction steps.

You can add fixtures to your instruction steps in BuildOS. These are additional CAD files that represent jigs, tooling, or workstation elements which you can now include in your instructions.

Here we will walk you through how to add fixtures to your instructions.

## Adding fixtures to your library

Similar to [tools, standard notes, and media](/how-to-be-successful-in-buildos/concepts/requirements.md), you have a library of fixtures in BuildOS. All of the fixtures you load into BuildOS are housed here, and you can re-use the same fixtures throughout your whole team!

You can easily add a new fixture to your library from one of two places:

* the Fixtures library page from the Dashboard
* the requirements panels inside of an instruction

To add a fixture to your library from inside of an instruction:

1. From the requirements panel, select the add fixture button
2. You can select new to upload a new 3D model of a fixture. You can specify the model, and provide a title and description

<figure><img src="https://2740836029-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FuT4VlrqtSgrz4OSV9Xp4%2Fuploads%2FMGoGc95cC2eDLkARbxN8%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=7450c7cb-6db7-4af0-80d4-7daae5a036fc" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>Create fixture menu</p></figcaption></figure>

3. Once you have made your selections, you can select `Upload` to save it to your library

{% hint style="info" %}
BuildOS prevents you from uploading the same CAD file to your fixtures library if it has been seen before. If this happens, BuildOS will bring you to the fixture previously loaded by you or another member of your team.
{% endhint %}

## Adding fixtures to your instruction steps

You can easily add a fixture to instruction steps. This can all be done from inside an instruction.

To add a fixture to your instructions:

1. Select the step you want the fixture to appear before

{% hint style="info" %}
This is only for the initial placement of the fixture in your instructions. This can be changed later.
{% endhint %}

2. Select the fixture from your library you wish to use, or upload a new 3D model as a new fixture.
3. Select the step you wish to remove the fixture from the assembly process.

4. Select save to add the fixture to your instructions.

{% hint style="info" %}
When a fixture is added to your instructions, there are two steps which are added, an installation step and a removal step.

{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="https://2740836029-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FuT4VlrqtSgrz4OSV9Xp4%2Fuploads%2Fcreuvihc4giIBArhAdgn%2Fsteps.png?alt=media&amp;token=99b52465-36d9-4477-9cf4-5a36302c1fd3" alt=""><figcaption><p>Fixture steps in the instructions</p></figcaption></figure>

5. You can reposition the steps in the assembly sequence for the fixture installation and removal by dragging in the tree similar to other steps.

{% hint style="info" %}
There are a few restrictions on where a fixture step can exist in an instruction:

* Fixture installation must come before fixture removal.
* Fixture installation/removal cannot take place inside of a kit, cluster, or combination.
  {% endhint %}

6. You can reposition the fixture in the 3D visuals by selecting `Position` from the `Requirements` panel.

<figure><img src="https://2740836029-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FuT4VlrqtSgrz4OSV9Xp4%2Fuploads%2FGSeOQm5jT7tgV4UsBEeP%2Frequirements%20panel.png?alt=media&amp;token=f6b7732e-5889-4af0-8101-a9677ca77bad" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

7. This will open the positioning mode for fixtures. You can select between `Drag` and `Rotate` to position the fixture in the 3D window.

<figure><img src="https://2740836029-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FuT4VlrqtSgrz4OSV9Xp4%2Fuploads%2FHkSNB9kXrVck3BjkoGTQ%2Fmenu.png?alt=media&amp;token=474cc5f2-78e7-4c6f-be9e-451ff2e5a32d" alt=""><figcaption><p>Fixture positioning menu</p></figcaption></figure>

## Managing your fixtures library

In addition to adding a fixture to your library, you can also deprecate fixtures in your library.

You can easily deprecate a fixture from the fixture item menu from inside of an instruction or from the Fixtures library page on the dashboard.

<figure><img src="https://2740836029-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FuT4VlrqtSgrz4OSV9Xp4%2Fuploads%2F7YiCBePQSs8A4e3uKBBF%2FScreenshot%202025-10-31%20163314.png?alt=media&amp;token=b32905db-28ff-4957-9a30-1c4d1b65326f" alt="" width="563"><figcaption><p>Fixture item menu</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
Deprecating a fixture will not remove it from existing instructions, and will prevent adding the fixture to future instruction steps.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
If you want to re-activate a fixture previously in your library, you can simply upload the same 3D model, and BuildOS will prompt you to re-activate it.
{% endhint %}
