# Traceability

This will cover the actions necessary to provide and modify traceability information

## What is Traceability?

In BuildOS, a [traceability requirement](/user-guide/traceability-requirements.md) is a unique identifier for a [run](/operator-guide/completing-a-run.md#what-is-a-run), such as a serial number, work order, or lot number. Operator+ enforces traceability by requiring users to input this information at the start of each run.

## Starting a New Run

Before starting a new run, you may be required to enter traceability requirements. Depending on your revision settings, this may include any of:

* Serial Number
* Work Order
* Lot Number
* Bin Number
* Purchase Order
* Batch Number

You may also start a run from an active session. Clicking on the Start New Run tab at the top of the viewer will reveal the same modal.

To preview the instruction without starting a run, click the X button at the top right of the modal. This will open the standard [Operator Viewer](/operator-guide/operator-viewer.md).

## Changing Traceability Information

If you need to modify traceability information during a run, you may do so by clicking on the tracking tab at the top of the viewer.

When the run is completed, you will have a chance to edit traceability requirements for the run. If no adjustments are made at this stage, no further changes can be made to traceability requirements.

## Duplicate Information

If the specified traceability information is a duplicate, and the revision requires [unique traceability](/user-guide/traceability-requirements.md), you will be:

* Prompted to enter new traceability requirements if the duplicate run is complete
* Prompted to resume the run if the duplicate run is incomplete
