# How to improve graphics performance

How to enable WebGPU in your browser so the BuildOS 3D viewer can use your computer's graphics card.

## Why BuildOS needs WebGPU

BuildOS displays interactive 3D models directly in your browser using **WebGPU**, a modern browser technology that lets web pages draw with your computer's graphics card. When WebGPU is unavailable, the 3D viewer cannot start and BuildOS shows a message titled **"WebGPU is required to display 3D models."**

Nothing is wrong with your model or project when this happens — WebGPU is built into all supported browsers, but it is sometimes switched off by default settings, an older browser version, or your organization's IT policy. Turning it on usually takes about a minute. Find your browser and operating system below and follow the steps.

Browsers do not allow websites to open `chrome://` settings pages directly, so for the steps below you need to copy each address and paste it into your browser's address bar yourself.
{% endhint %}

## Supported browsers

| Browser        | Minimum version |
| -------------- | --------------- |
| Google Chrome  | 113             |
| Microsoft Edge | 113             |
| Safari         | 26              |

Firefox and other browsers are not supported. If you are using one of them, switch to one of the browsers above.

## Chrome and Edge on Windows and macOS

The steps are identical in Chrome and Edge — in Edge, replace `chrome://` with `edge://` in each address.

1. **Make sure graphics acceleration is on.** Copy `chrome://settings/system` and paste it into your address bar, then turn on **Use graphics acceleration when available**.
2. **Turn on WebGPU.** Copy `chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu` and paste it into your address bar, then set **Unsafe WebGPU Support** to **Enabled**.
3. **Relaunch the browser.** Click the **Relaunch** button that appears at the bottom of the flags page, then return to BuildOS and reload the page.

{% hint style="info" %}
Despite the name, **Unsafe WebGPU Support** simply turns the WebGPU feature on. The "unsafe" label is Chrome's standard wording for features that are still rolling out on some hardware configurations.
{% endhint %}

## Chrome and Edge on Linux

On Linux, WebGPU also requires the Vulkan graphics backend to be enabled.

3. **Turn on Vulkan.** Copy `chrome://flags/#enable-vulkan` and paste it into your address bar, then set **Vulkan** to **Enabled**.
4. **Relaunch the browser.** Click the **Relaunch** button that appears at the bottom of the flags page, then return to BuildOS and reload the page.

## Safari on macOS

1. **Update Safari.** WebGPU is on by default in Safari 26 and newer. Open the Apple menu → **System Settings** → **General** → **Software Update** and install any available updates.
2. **If the viewer still does not load, turn on the WebGPU feature flag.** In Safari, open **Settings → Advanced** and check **Show features for web developers**. Then open the new **Feature Flags** tab, enable **WebGPU**, and quit and reopen Safari.

## Still having trouble?

If the 3D viewer still does not load after following the steps for your browser:

* **Update your browser.** Older versions may not include WebGPU at all — see the [supported browsers](#supported-browsers) table above.
* **Update your graphics drivers.** On Windows, check Windows Update or your GPU manufacturer's website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel). On macOS, graphics drivers are included in system updates.
* **On a company-managed device?** Some organizations lock browser flags and settings through IT policy. If the options above are grayed out or missing, contact your IT department and ask them to enable WebGPU and hardware acceleration for your browser.
* **Contact support.** If none of the above resolves the issue, reach out to the Dirac team and include your browser name and version, your operating system, and a screenshot of the message BuildOS shows.
