# Path & Sequence Planning

## Overview

Path and sequence planning work together to create optimal assembly instructions by determining **what order** parts install (sequence) and **how they move** (paths) during installation.

### Sequence Planning

#### What It Does

Sequence planning determines the optimal order to install parts by analyzing:

* **Geometric dependencies** - What must go in first
* **Accessibility** - Can you reach the part at this step
* **Blocking relationships** - Does this part block others
* **Assembly constraints** - Natural build progression

**The goal:** Find a sequence that minimizes backtracking, provides clear access, and follows logical assembly progression.

#### Quick vs Deep Sequence Planning

BuildOS offers two sequence planning modes:

**Quick Sequence Planning:**

* Fast heuristic-based approach
* Runs in seconds to minutes
* Good for most assemblies under 500 parts
* Produces reliable results for standard assembly patterns

**Deep Sequence Planning:**

* Comprehensive optimization algorithm
* Takes longer (minutes to hours for complex assemblies)
* Best for complex assemblies with many dependencies
* Explores more sequence possibilities for optimal result

### Path Planning

#### What It Does

Path planning determines the movement trajectory for each part during installation. BuildOS calculates collision-free paths that show how parts move from their pre-assembly position to their final installed location.

#### Auto Paths vs Custom Paths

**Auto Paths (Default):**

* BuildOS automatically calculates the movement
* Generated on upload and after sequence planning
* Works for most standard installations
* Fast and requires no manual work

**Custom Paths:**

* Manually define the exact movement trajectory
* Required for complex motions (curves, multi-stage movements)
* Use when auto paths don't match real assembly process
* Takes more time but provides precise control

### Complete Workflow

#### Step-by-Step Process

**1. Upload Assembly**

* Upload your CAD file to BuildOS
* System processes geometry and generates initial auto paths
* Default sequence is created (often not optimal)

**2. Run Sequence Planning**

* Click **Planning → Quick Sequence** (or Deep for complex assemblies)
* System analyzes dependencies and optimizes installation order
* Auto paths are recalculated for the new sequence

**3. Review Generated Sequence**

* Navigate through steps in Instructions View
* Play animations to see movements
* Verify order makes logical sense
* Check for any unusual patterns

**4. Review Path Animations**

* Watch each part's movement animation
* Look for strange motions (spinning, zigzagging, incorrect approach)
* Identify parts that need custom paths

**5. Check DFM Issues**

* Review the DFM panel for warnings:
  * **Model overlaps** - Parts physically intersecting
  * **Path obstructions** - Movement blocked by other parts
* Resolve issues by adjusting sequence or creating custom paths

**6. Create Custom Paths (If Needed)**

* Only create custom paths where auto paths don't work
* Focus on complex movements or obstructed paths
* Keep paths simple with minimum waypoints

**7. Export Instructions**

* Paths are included in animations and exported instructions
* Review final output to ensure paths match your process
